The Longest Line: A Very Rough Game

by Samara Fae on 7:08 PM

Lying almost naked on the ground,
These kids look like lines of slaves awaiting punishment.

The Longest Line, that's how it's called, is one of the infamous parlor games in the Philippines, along with the 'Pabitin', 'Basag Palayok', 'Give me what I want', and 'Trip to Jerusalem'. I have no idea whether the last two were just imports and including the longest line as well. As the name says, the game aims to create the longest line among the competing themes by placing the things that a contestant has on him/herself and use it up to build up the line.

Children at most, the active ones, would not tend to hesitate in any parlor games even when there were no prices promised to them. They'd try to compete however they want it with two goals: to win, and to have fun.

In our outreach program in the rural areas of Koronadal City, we went to Supon Elementary School, met with their pupils, and aside from turning over our donations, we also facilitated a few of the parlor games for the kids to enjoy.

It was almost a cloudless morning and the sun was high on the zenith, piercing our skins almost like fire. But it was not yet cancerous, I suppose.

I facilitated a group of fifteen and when the game started, to my partial shock (that's because they've already suggested me to take their clothes off for the game), I see the boys take off almost all of what they've worn save for their underwears. When they have nothing else to offer, they dashed to the end of the line and spread themselves there.

I was irate of the sun, but the commotion before me was more troublesome to me. Basically, the children were having fun no matter how uncomfortable it was, and at most, I couldn't help but feel bothered by the way how abject they looked before me as a spectator. I surveyed the rest of the facilitators, and they don't seem to be troubled by the sight. They were enjoying the game too - some even donated their things to become part of the line.

So, maybe it was just me. Or maybe not.

To line it all up:The pupils, queuing their possessions to create the longest line.

Spread all over: The children spreading their bodies on the ground to become part of the line.

That was quick:After the time limit has expired and the winner identified,
everyone rushed to get their lots back.

What was all that for? Their team lost, his shirt he has to wear back.
This child tries to get back on his clothes heedless of their loss.

Oh. the team who creates the longest line wins. There is only one basic rule and that is: to use only the stuff you have on yourself (e.g. shirt, belt, necklaces, slippers, and anything inside your bag if you're lucky to carry them with you.) But sometimes, a bag is not allowed on the game. :p

@chocobread: well, even under the heat of the sun, at the thought of getting rewards and playing with friends, I might also have had fun too.

@Nyl: Oo nga naman! Di na kelangan ng maraming props~

    @Angeli: Thanks. I'm honored. (n_n)
